Back to school is rapidly approaching, and whether you’re returning to your college home or taking that first leap into the new college atmosphere, even thinking about meeting new people or expanding your group of friends can seem stressful.
The best way to meet new people that have one – or more – of the same interests as you is to join clubs. Just because you’ve left high school doesn’t mean you have to abandon clubs and activities related to your school. Clubs also often hold cross-school events that allow you to connect with even more people and introduce you to new things. Whether you’re interested in taking gay and lesbian rights to a whole new level or want to meet people you can connect with, the gay and lesbian club on your campus is a great place to start.
There is a chance your school doesn’t have a gay and lesbian club. Do a little research into why the club hasn’t been formed. Sometimes it’s just a matter of the club officers not keeping up with paperwork. In that case, see what you have to do to get the club up and running again. If you put your heart into building a safe judgment-free zone for people to go to, your actions will benefit more than just yourself. There could be students who are looking for connections just like you or people who want to try to make a difference in the community, local and beyond.
As a lesbian, a friend of a lesbian, or any other student going off to college, keeping an open mind is the most important thing. The second most important is ambition. Once you decide to join or or start an LGBT or other related club, keeping the club alive and the members interested is incredibly important. The more people who want to show up to meetings, the more people that will show up to events, and the more programs you can create. It is also your opportunity to get involved and create experiences and opportunities you won’t find anywhere else. Find related clubs on your campus, neighboring campuses, and even campuses across the country that are already established and talk to the officers about teaming up for events or fundraisers.
Being a lesbian can be fun. You just have to put your heart into it.
