It’s almost that time for the kiddos to go back to school. Around this time, parents may find the task of preparing their children to go back to school to be an overwhelming process. Parents may have to deal with a host of responsibilities that include everything from school registration to buying school clothes.
There is no question that this time of year can be expensive. But, parents are not alone. In fact, there are a handful of resources available to families who could use extra help in ensuring all of their children’s needs are met for the new school year.
The Dream Center in Los Angeles is hosting its 16th annual Back to School Backpack Giveaway on Saturday, August 13, 2011 from 10:00 AM to noon. Headed by the Dream Center’s founder, Matthew Barnett, the church will hand out 2,000 backpacks full of school supplies. Students will be able to receive free clothes, dental screenings, and haircuts.
In addition to these services, kids from all over Los Angeles will have the opportunity to enjoy a festive carnival that will include a water slide, petting zoo, and bounce houses.
Founded in 1994, the Dream Center helps thousands of individuals and families by providing transitional housing, shelters, rehabilitation programs, food and medical programs, educational development resources, and foster care intervention.
The Student National Medical Association at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine is sponsoring its 7th Annual UCLA Synergy Health Fair.
The association will collaborate with the UCLA School of Dentistry, UCLA Mobile Eye Clinic, and a variety of experienced doctors from Los Angeles to provide free dental cleanings, fillings, comprehensive eye exams, and mammograms. In addition, students will receive free backpacks and school supplies.
This event is open to the public and people of all ages can receive these services. The fair takes place on Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Macedonia Baptist Church of Los Angeles.
This list is not at all exhaustive. There is a vast amount of upcoming events and programs in the greater Los Angeles area dedicated to the cause of ensuring children have the necessary materials to begin school.
