Back to school time has come again. Parents and children look forward to this time of year. Parents are looking forward to a break and kids miss their friends. Parents are facing a new challenge this year with changes in the No Child Left Behind Act. Many people have seen firsthand how this particular act has affected the quality of education. The general consensus with many parents in St Petersburg, Florida is that their children are not receiving a quality education. Budget shortfalls and potential school employee layoffs are adding to the stress of the situation. People have complained that the FCAT and the No child left behind act; are causing the focus of education to become clouded. Kids have even come home and stated that they are stressed out because of the FCAT. Children in elementary schools should not be expressing this kind of feeling. Teachers should not have to focus on just the information covered in the test; they should be able to give a well-rounded and complete education. The issue has become even more complex due to the Federal Government making changes to the No Child Left Behind Act; that also includes granting a waiver to individual states that qualify. What is going on you may ask? The school system should not have to pass all of the kids because of the act. Kids deserve all of the help necessary to succeed and achieve a great education. Promoting a child who is not ready is a disservice to that child. Parents are going to have to step in and make their voices heard. The public needs to be part of the solution and help the kids at home. Everyone needs to be part of the solution; so that all kids and not just special needs or struggeling kids are not lef behind.
