Durango Mountain Resort (DMR) announced yesterday that the Durango DEVO Mountain Bike Camps have been expanded. Three one-week camps, August 1-5, August 8-12 and August 15-19 are being offered. Camps are designed for kids ages 7-12 years old and include all skills and abilities.
For a single fee, your child is provided instruction for the entire week, given bike up-lift access and transportation from Durango to Purgatory, which includes bus service for camp participants and their bikes.
Kids spend five full days learning technique, etiquette, trail and bike maintenance and get to enjoy the fresh mountain air and incredible outdoors. Other camp activities include special guest appearances by Sweet Elite and a gravity skill session.
Choose one, two, or all three weeks (each week’s format repeats). Kids must have own bike and helmet (Devo does have some loaners). The camp runs from 9-3 p.m. with transportation on the DMR buses from downtown Durango (bikes loaded on Devo racks). Devo coaches will lead rides and serve as your kid’s camp counselor all day. Kids will be placed in groups based upon ability (beginner/intermediate/advanced)
A typical day at camp starts at 8:30 a.m., meeting in town for bus transport to DMR. At 9 a.m. groups meet and drop off lunches. At 9:15 there’s a quick talk about the day’s events, followed by a Skill Sesh and filming for later viewing at the base area at 9:30. After an hour, it’s time for a snack then a ride up chair 4 4 to access more trails prior to the noon lunchtime. There’s a bike maintenance seminar at 1 p.m. till about 2:30, when the kids watch the video from the Skill Sesh. At 3:30 the bus returns to Durango.
Other camp activities include the aforementioned special guest appearances by Sweet Elite, gravity skill sesh, bike fit, trail building, family ride for intermediate/advanced with shuttle support on the classic five star Hermosa Trail.
The $225 registration fee includes 5:1 coaching, both in the DMR Bike Park and on the mountain, utilizing the chairlift, videoing for skill development, one week of lift access, and free transport to and from downtown to DMR (bike transport as well). Not included is lunch, snack and equipment (bike, helmet, camelback, etc.).
