Jeeves in the Morning
August 25, 2011 – September 25, 2011
Jeeves in the Morning is another of the wonderful (mis)adventures of Jeeves and Wooster, written by P. G. Wodehouse, and adapted for the stage by Chicago’s Mark Richard.
Jeeves in the Morning once again finds Bertie in a pickle, and this time it involves both love and high finance. His Uncle Percy has asked him down to Steeple Bumpleigh to aid in a clandestine business deal. Meanwhile, his cousin Nobby is unofficially engaged to Bertie’s friend Boko Fittleworth, and needs Bertie’s help in getting the approval of her father, the aforementioned Uncle Percy. Making these tricky tasks more difficult is that Bertie has also unwittingly landed in the middle of the on-again, off-again romance between his former fiancée Florence Craye and his old school acquaintance G. D’Arcy (Stilton) Cheesewright. Add in the not-so-helpful Boy Scout Edwin, and Bertie quickly finds himself in an ever-deepening muddle which seems impossible to resolve. Fortunately, Jeeves is the quintessential gentleman’s gentleman, always ready with the perfect attire, the restorative cocktail, or the solution to virtually any predicament, and he may just manage to set things right. The result is a rollicking evening of comedy which is perfect for one and all.
Wodehouse is still revered by his readers for his superlatively witty use of the English language. One Wodehouse website notes, “You read his prose, all perfectly plain English, and then you swear you’d never have come up with quite so amusing a way of putting it.”
