Brandon Rios: Too real to fake it
“If Arum thinks I can fight Pacquiao, I’ll be ready.” That’s what the victorious Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios (28-0-1, 21KOs) told the press after his sensational 3rd round demolition job over Urbano Antillon (28-3-0, 20KOs) at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California Saturday night.
The statement was in response to his promoter Bob Arum’s proclamation that he thinks Rios can challenge Pound-for-Pound king Manny Pacquiao, who said that the 25-year-old Mexican warrior from Oxnard “has the power and speed” to match up with the Filipino southpaw.
Rios went to war with Antillon from the opening bell, taking all the best his opponent could throw at him, while dishing out his patented ‘Bam Bam’ relentless assault. In a fight which Rios himself thought would go into the later rounds, three rounds of punishment was all Antillon could handle as he was dropped twice in the third forcing the hand of referee David Mendoza in the final seconds to wave off the still dazed Antillon who was stumbling on the ropes.

Although it would be foolish to think that Rios would fight Pacquiao immediately after the latter’s November fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, in a year’s time, a clash between the two offensive demons definitely makes sense. Rios, who had to strip naked to make the 135 weight limit during Friday’s weigh-ins, is ready to move up in weight after one or two more fights.
Rios also has some added motivation to beat Pacquiao, after he watched his friend and training partner Antonio Margarito get sent to the hospital last November when the two fought in Dallas. Rios also had a lot of controversial things to say regarding Pacquiao and his trainer Freddie Roach, which only adds to the drama of this potential match-up.
