Nici Peper’s goal is simple: “I want to conquer the world one small town at a time,” she says. Those unfamiliar with her repertoire will want to catch up in a hurry. She has risen to the top of the ReverbNation.com Folk Charts for Stillwater, Minnesota, boasting over 900 fans. Over the past few years, she has quickly made a name for herself around the Twin Cities and surrounding areas.
Daughter of a Lutheran Pastor, Nici’s musical roots go back to her days of singing in the church choir. “In addition to being the pastor, my mother was also the music director for our church,” said Peper. “She wanted me to play the organ, but I chose the guitar.” It makes sense, supposing that conquering the world one small town at a time is a lot easier when you have an instrument that you can actually carry.
The Hudson, Wisconsin native describes her style as Americana. Her sound does not replicate the chirpiness often heard from typical female singer-songwriters. Her voice is smooth, jovial, and prevailing. Peper normally plays with a duo, accompanied by longtime friend Kyle Koliha on lead guitar. “Sometimes we play with a full bad,” Peper said. “Whatever the venue calls for.”
Nici and Kyle both expressed their adoration for the strong local music culture in Minneapolis and the surrounding areas. “It’s a great place to be able to network with other musicians,” Peper said. Koliha added “Even the surrounding areas and smaller towns: A lot of the time they are even more appreciative out there because it’s not like it is in the city, where there are a bunch of bands willing to play at the drop of the hat.”
In addition to playing the small-town shows, Nici also regularly plays in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. On September 10 Nici will be playing at the South Minneapolis Block Party. She will also be playing Kieren’s Irish Pub in downtown Minneapolis on September 29 around 8:00 PM. See below for a map of the venue.
Nici has also played at The Fine Line Music Cafe and Varsity Theater in Minneapolis and O’Gara’s and Plums Neighborhood Grill & Bar in Saint Paul, as well as Pub Monique in Stillwater, MN. She also plays several shows throughout Wisconsin so it’s a good idea to check out her Reverb Nation or Facebook pages for more information on Nici and updates on her shows.
