WASHINGTON DC: An organization seeking to outlaw forced and child marriages in North America has called upon the Toronto Police to arrest the father of a victim of honor killing in Canada for investigations.
The Justice 4 Shaher Bano Shaheed Campaign, USA & Canada, in a statement Monday urged the Canadian authorities to arrest the shariah-loving Mullah Abdul Ghafoor for subjecting countless people to agony because of his religious extremism
Ghafoor is father of Shaher Bano Shahdady, 21, who was killed by her estranged husband Malik Abdul Rustam July 22 at her Scarborough apartment.
“Ghafoor was the one who took away Shahdady to Pakistan. According to family and friends of the victim he forcibly married Shahdady against her wishes when she was barely 18 years of age. All this violated Canadian laws,” the Washington DC-based campaign said.
The campaign said Ghafoor used to be a hardworking, law-abiding citizen of Canada until he became a member of the radical Tablighi Jama’at that follows strict tenets of Islam.
Shahdady was forced to wear a burqa and even gloves.
Her estranged husband suspected she was having an affair with strangers on FACEBOOK.
The campaign said friends and even some family members of Shahdady are willing to testify against Ghafoor in Canadian courts.
Canada experienced two honor killings one after another in as many weeks– the last two weeks of July –, bringing the issue of honor killings into national limelight.
The campaign also urged the U.S. and Canadian governments to conduct a survey of Muslim population in U.S. and Canada over the question of shariah and in case a family head says he wants to follow Islamic laws then the government must take away the children from such father for the safety of the young ones.
The Justice 4 Shaher Bano Shahdady Campaign was launched in the wake of the killing of Shahdady as a project of the American Friends of Balochistan. It has a five-point agenda that seeks to end forced marriages and emphasizes equality of sexes.
