Eighteen year old Ashley Yingling attended Little Rock Fashion Week’s Media Mixer at the Lulav and all was fascinated by the amount of followers her blog “Love for Fashion” (http://loveforfashion.tumblr.com/) has accumulated in just a little over two years. Yingling was asked by Brandon Campbell, producer of Little Rock fashion Week, to come up and speak about her popular blog. He introduced her as a fashion blogger who has gained so much “fashion cred” with her blog that she was invited to come to New York Fashion Week this year. Yingling was shy about speaking, so she had her father speak on her behalf. He claimed she has obtained over 156,000 followers to which Yingling quietly whispered, “It’s 157,000 now.” Fashion blogger extradinaire, Ashley Yingling, opens up in the following interview.
How did you get started blogging about fashion and why?
Getting into fashion was very random actually. I started with a personal blog, which is just posting random things and talking about me. Then I started posting more and more fashion to the point I didn’t even talk about myself anymore. Someone messaged me and said I should just make a fashion blog and so, I did. From there it was history.
Can you describe your blog?
My blog is an inspirational fashion blog. I post pictures of other peoples’ fashion and mine to help other people pick their style. I post pictures of what I like and because I’ve been doing it so long I have learned what my followers like, also.
I am told you are the #1 fashion blog on tumblr. What advice would you give other fashion bloggers?
I’m not sure if I’m the #1 totally, my dad likes to say that more than me…(giggles). I would tell them to stick to what they love. Keep your bloggers wanting more, so that means you really need to post a lot. Don’t change yourself or your blog to please anyone else.
You are attending Little Rock Fashion Week, so who are your favorite designers so far and why?
It’s so hard to pick because, they are all amazing. I really love Aaliyah Fisher, because she is so young and she is doing so well. Her clothing is so chic and when you see it you’re just like “Wow.” Nicole McGehee is another designer that I really like. Her clothing is so eye catching and reminds me of clothing that I saw on the runway in New York.
What is your style and what inspires you most in fashion?
I have more of a “boho” or “indie” style. Boho is more casual and relaxed wear with a certain hippie style touch to it. Indie is short for indepenedent meaning that you wear whatever you want to wear. It’s sort of a random combination of things in a way that doesn’t really match. Like mixing prints, vintage and modern things and layering things in unexpected ways. What inspires me is catchy clothing and things that look so chic. I like things that you would not normally look at and say “Why would anyone wear that.”
What is your favorite quote?
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!”~Audrey Hepburn
How would you describe the fashion scene in Arkansas?
There is so much talent and there is so many different styles in Arkansas. For each part of the state there is different scene of style and fashion.
What perks do you receive for being a highly successful fashion blogger and what has been your favorite perk yet?
Some of the perks is going to fashion shows, meeting a lot of people in the fashion industry and getting free things. My favorite thing is all the free stuff I get. I’m a sucker for free things and when I get something in the mall it’s like Christmas to me. My followers or stores send me their clothing/jewelry for me to try and blog about.
How much time do you spend on your blog each week and in that time what task takes up most of your focus (research, writing, marketing, networking, etc.)?
I spend so much time on my blog it’s unreal. Now that I graduated high school, it will give me so much more time. What takes the most time is actually finding the pictures I like and wanna post.
What is the one question you wish someone would ask you and what is the answer?
This is so out there but, “Would you like to intern at Oscar De La Renta?” My answer, “OMG YES.” Then I pass out.
