My dictionary defines a sports bar as a bar featuring televised sports. Wikipedia doesn’t offer sports bar as a category unto itself, but one can deduce they do in fact recognize sports bars as a dive bar featuring sporting events on the tele…
So, think neighborhood bar where lots of locals gather to watch sporting events on the television while enjoying pub grub in an inviting and friendly atmosphere. Okay then, I’m going to look for those dives where one would like to hang their hat and while away some hours with your best sports club on view. Maybe, if you’re lucky you’ll get to spark your taste buds and enjoy the company of the staff.
I believe it may be appropriate to list a few criteria for my hunt for Best in:
- Sports array
- Friendliness of staff and patrons
So, let’s go check a few places. My first stop was Mike’s B.B.Q., located at 1356 W. Valley Parkway, in Escondido. Their website: http://Mikesbbq.net/ shows most of what’s important but doesn’t feature enough of the bar even though many of Mike’s patrons feel the bar is their best feature.
The bar has some separation from the main dinning area but not much. The bar is very large with so many TVs hanging on walls that you’ll be hard pressed not to see the game of choice. The day I went for baseball, the Pads were featured and were on most of the screens. It’s too early to tell yet but I’m assuming they’ll offer a load of games on Sundays and of coarse Monday nights should be football for sure, ‘Oh for sure’ as the server said to me.
Given that this is a new business, I say to you here and now, take it upon yourself to get what you want to eat and drink. The restaurant side of this spot is designed for self service so if you sit on the bar side and no one comes to take your order… go to the bar and be ready to ‘man up’ and place your order in a good natured way. Service will improve and if you get beef ribs the taste will do nothing short of amaze you.
Go there and make this your place. I’m hoping it does well in the coming years because I love good BBQ.
