Apollo 18 hits theaters this weekend. To prepare for the new science-fiction/horror film from Dimension films I sat down and talked to nuclear physicist/author/UFO expert Stanton Friedman this morning about the Apollo missions, Hollywood, ETI’s, SETI, and Pink Floyd’s best album… The Dark Side of the Moon.
Stanton Friedman has testified in front of Congress, and recently spoken on a panel in front of regal company containing Bill Clinton, Tony Blair, Bill Gates, and now…. the National Movie Examiner.
Here’s what we talked about:
JR: So Stan, are you planning on seeing Apollo 18?
Stanton Friedman: Yes. Very definitely.
JR: Has Hollywood ever come close to getting it right about ETI’s?
Stanton Friedman: They did some things right in E.T... overdone in Close Encounters, and WAY OVERDONE in Independence Day…
JR: How does a nuclear physicist get tangled up with Hollywood?
Stanton Friedman: It was easy. I lived in California, did a lot of TV shows like Merv Griffin, Mike Douglas, Steve Allen, Nightline, Tom Snider, etc, and worked on some documentaries such as UFO’s Are Real. One quickly learns that, despite my having my name on five books, more people watch movies than read books. I do lots of talk shows as well. Find I enjoy the camera and the microphone… I am a true Leo…
JR: Could our government today really get away with a secret project such as the one depicted in Apollo 18 – the project being a secret mission to the Moon? Could it have back during the Apollo era?
Stanton Friedman: Don’t really know. Governments have been doing black budget programs costing billions for many years. Think of Stealth. 10 billion dollars over ten years. Our first spy satellite – Corona – was developed in 1960 – got more data than all the U-2 spy planes. Corona wasn’t revealed for 35 years. Many people are unaware of such agencies as the National Reconnaissance Office which spends billions in secret every year. It should be noted that in 1994 the sophisticated Clementine satellite in orbit around the Moon obtained loads of data. One wonders why – it was a Department of Defense system.
JR: Is it possible that our Defense Department has a base or some kind of installation on the dark side of the Moon?
Stanton Friedman: It wouldn’t surprise me. They have the budget to do what they want and the security to protect their secrets.
JR: The Pentagon has a much greater budget for space operations than does NASA. It is speculation, but many within the science community have said that military is actually AHEAD of NASA in research. How likely then is it that the Pentagon has great knowledge of our solar system beyond what NASA knows?
Stanton Friedman: Such information would be highly compartmented. Secrets can indeed be kept. Very few in either DOD or NASA would have a need to know.
JR: I met a cab driver in Las Vegas who claimed that UFO’s were Satan’s carriage service so that he could shuffle his followers all over the Universe – any validity to that theory?
Stanton Friedman: I doubt it. Pat Robertson has said that there is no other intelligent life in the Universe than on Earth. The UFO stuff – he said – was the work of the Devil. I think he’s completely wrong.
Apollo 18 opens this Friday – September 2nd – in theaters nationwide.
As far as believability and Hollywood are concerned – the two concepts usually exist as separate entities. Or do they? Not that I’m saying that there’s an ounce of truth in Dimension Film’s new sci-fi/horror flick Apollo 18 – I haven’t had a chance to see the film just yet. But the movie has been adapted from tales 50 years older than the X-Files.
Was there an actual Apollo 18 mission? Stanton Friedman told me that the United States government has so far denied that an Apollo 18 mission was ever planned because it wasn’t in the space program budget. But the truth is that NASA funded two Apollo missions. Both 18 and 19 were paid for as were their perspective astronauts trained to man these missions. Stanton also told me that he was informed – personally – of seven different cases where Air Force craft sent to attack UFO’s never returned from their missions. Mr. Friedman says that over 166 military personnel have been killed in these ET recon missions and their families weren’t told for decades….
Spooky? Or Spooky Mulder?
Stanton Friedman can be investigated further at his site Stantonfriedman.com. On September 24th Mr. Friedman will be in Lincoln New Hampshire celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Betty and Barney Hill UFO experience.
