Tuesday, August 30, 2011 marked the first day that NFL teams were forced to make cuts in order to get their rosters down to a league-mandated 80 players. The New Orleans Saints made a lot of expected moves during this first round, but one big name does stand out among the group and now its time to look at the players that are no longer wearing black and gold.
Don’t forget that rosters need to get down to a regular season limit of 53 players within the next few days so a lot more players will soon be sent packing.
Check out Analyzing the New Orleans Saints first round of cuts – Part One
~ S DeAndre McDaniel: The first undrafted free agent signed by the Saints after the NFL Lockout ended was the first player to announce he had been cut by the team. Early on, McDaniel was looking quite good in training camp practices but as time went on, he never seemed to improve or stand out. Trades and signings of veteran safeties have made it harder for McDaniel to make an impact and he never quite was able to do enough.
~ WR John Chiles: Facing a daunting task of trying to break into the upper tier of Saints wide receivers, Chiles played hard but could never quite do enough.
~ RB Chris Taylor: One of the standouts in preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, Taylor also felt the pressure of trying to make his name stand out in a crowded position. With Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram, Chris Ivory, Darren Sproles, and an emerging Joique Bell…there was just no room for Taylor to stick around. He’s a great talent though and could possibly end up landing somewhere else in the league.
~ OT Dan Gay: A signing made late into camp mostly due to mounting injuries, it wasn’t really expected that Gay would stick around.
~ OG Roger Allen: This is player that had a decent chance of making the team though, had he been able to stay healthy and actually get on the field a bit more. Allen is a good talent, but just was never able to show what he could do.
More cuts are coming soon and that means at least close to 30 more players will soon be sent home.
