It’s a busy time for dog owners here in San Diego County this weekend! There’s always something to do, but today, August 27, 2011, is a very special event. Today is the American Cancer Society’s Bark for Life- San Diego Event in Ocean Beach’s Dusty Rhodes Park.
Bark for Life is a Relay for Life fundraising event by the American Cancer Society, which is dedicated to raising awareness and someday finding a cure for canine and human cancers alike and this event honors the care-giving qualities of those canine companions.
The event will be today from 9AM-1PM. Registration and check-in for the Bark for Life walk starts at 9:00, followed by the opening ceremony at 10:00 and the walk at 10:20. Cancer survivors will walk the first lap and then all participants may join. It’s $25.00 per pet/owner team, which includes a BARK bandana for your dog, or $10.00 per individual to walk. That’s not all! The fun lasts the whole day! There will be Costume contests, look-alike contests and contests for best-trick. Fly ball demonstrations will continue all day, as well as pet first-aid demonstrations and even Dog Yoga (Doga)! There will be an agility course and a “Barkery” store. There will be lots of vendors as well. Everything from veterinary clinics to animal photography studios and the latest in Fido fashions! Also on location will be The PETCO Foundation, Isha Yoga, Camp Run-A-Mutt, The San Diego Humane Society & SPCA as well as The Fast Fourward Flyball Team, (just to name a few). Any dogs who have raised over $500.00 for The American Cancer Society will receive the “Golden Bone Award” and let’s not forget about the raffle auction. Many items and services have been donated for auction from local businesses such as Mum’s Tattoo in Pacific Beach, The Honest Kitchen, Point Loma Pet Pantry and Leash Your Fitness, so it’s sure to be action-packed day for you and your pet!
As always remember your canine etiquette while at Bark for Life. Keep your dog on maximum 6’ leash and be sure they’re current on all required vaccinations and please pick-up after your pet, there will be canine trash bags available. Water will be available as well for dogs and people, but bring your own if you can.
