Pasco County, Florida – A six-week old black and white pitbull puppy was rescued yesterday after a local resident spotted the animal clinging to life floating on a palm frond in the Holiday canal. The pup, now named Wilson, after the floating basketball in the movie Castaways is recovering at Animal Services in Land O’ Lakes.
James Cooper was walking his own dog when he spotted what he orginally thought was a toy floating in the canal on Flora Ave. and Basswood Drive in Holiday. He called Pasco Animal Services who came out and rescued the defenseless little puppy who had medical tape and gauze wrapped around his neck.
The puppy had one ear amputated, and the other ear was torn. He was cold, wet, and dehydrated, but is already wagging his tail and looking for love – just as a puppy should be doing, but Wilson’s past contains “extreme animal cruelty” as stated by Pasco Animal Services investigator, John Douglass.
According to authorities, someone most likely had tried to dock the puppy’s ears and when they couldn’t do it correctly, they threw the puppy into the canal as if he were yesterday’s trash.
Ear docking of pitbulls allegedly makes them look more fearful. In dogfighting, the ears are commonly ripped if left long.
Pasco County Animal Services is asking the public for help finding the person(s) responsible for this cruelty. Charges of felony animal cruelty and neglect are likely to be levied against the owner.
