Many couples argue, however, most couples are able to handle their disagreements between themselves. On very rare occasions do police need to be called to intervene, however, for some couples, the police involvement is anything but uncommon. On April 23rd, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall was stabbed in the abdomen by his wife, Michi Nogami-Marshall. He had to have minor surgery and was released the next day to recover at home. But this was not their first time facing domestic dispute problems. In March 2009, Michi and Brandon ran into trouble with the law when arrested for kicking and punching each other outside the home of Brandon’s fiancée at the time. The March case initially started with disorderly conduct charges that were later dropped. Brandon and his ex-girlfriend had many encounters with the Denver police due to heated arguments.
When questioned about the April dispute, Michi told the deputies that she was acting in self-defense when she grabbed the kitchen knife. However, Brandon had a different point of view of the story telling the deputies that he had fallen into a broken glass vase, yet there was no blood on the broken glass in the home. Michi refused to give any more information about the case, and Brandon provided a sworn statement that his wife had nothing to do with his injuries. This left the prosecution with nothing left to do other than simply dropping the case despite the fact that Michi had initially been charged with aggravated battery and a violation of pre-trial conditions. Michi violated the judge’s initial orders to stay at least 500 feet away from their home in Southwest Ranches, Florida. Sarahnell Murphy, who was the prosecutor in charge of the State’s domestic violence unit, had to give up any resolve in the case. As of Friday, Broward State has said that they will not be continuing any aggravated battery charges against Michi. The state has dropped the charges stating the conflicting evidence above from the case. The consistency of the police involvement suggests some solution may be needed to remove any domestic dispute issues.
