In this day and age, companies and solopreneurs alike use social media to take their promotional endeavors to the next level. However, while the Internet makes it a breathe to connect with people across the world, rules still apply. And if you do not follow them, chances are that your campaign may never be successful.
In this article, you will find nine tips that should help put you on the right path.
1. Define the word ‘success’
Any social media campaign starts with clear steps. The first one should always involve reflecting on the word ‘success’. Ask yourself what it really means to you. And do not forget to celebrate every little victory along the way.
2. Harness the power of social networking sites
Social networks are here to stay. So take advantage of them:
- Create a Facebook Fan Page. This will help you get indexed on major search engines within days. Do not forget to add a landing page to attract more fans.
- Open a Twitter account.
- Jump on the Google Plus bandwagon.
- Use LinkedIn to find and connect with potential professional partners.
3. Build a website
While Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Plus will help you take your social media campaign to the next level, always remember that your presence there is dependent upon the will of their creators; you are a ‘free tenant’. So, should they decide to close down, all your content would be lost.
You need a virtual business card, an Internet ‘shop window’ where people can find you first. And this should be your website. Wix, Yola and WordPress.com are excellent services for beginners.
4. Start a positive conversation
Being online for the sake of saying that you are online is not enough. To attract the right customers for your business, you need to engage with others.
Make sure that you update your Facebook Fan Page, Twitter handle and Google+ stream at least twice a day. Always share content that you know will benefit people in your niche. Ask and answer questions. Share uplifting stories, pictures and videos. And be as genuine as possible.

5. Use hashtags
Hashtags are specific to Twitter and really useful to connect and engage with the right Tweeps.

6. Create promotional videos
Videos are probably the best tool to draw attention to your social media campaign. A service like Animoto will allow you to create videos that are both professional and attractive. You can see an example here.
Do not forget to sign up for a YouTube / Vimeo account to upload and showcase all your videos in one convenient spot.
7. Write press releases
A press release is one of the easiest and most effective tools to reach members of the media. And if they are interested in covering your story, the resulting promotional boost may be huge for your campaign.

8. Do not hesitate to ask for help
“A closed mouth does not get fed,” as they say. If you need help, let people know. Tell them clearly what you need and what you are trying to do. Most of the time, they will be more than willing to lend you a hand.
However, do not be pushy. Give them room to breathe and be ready to reciprocate when the time comes.
9. Play nice
You cannot expect everybody to support your efforts. Keep a respectful and professional attitude, and always say “thank you”. After all, you never know how your graceful behavior may be perceived. People may end up changing their minds and start helping you when you least expect it!
