SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh spoke with the media after the team’s non-padded noon walkthrough. The head coach said that Thursday’s preseason game will be an opportunity for him to assess each player as the game rolls on.
With Michael Crabtree returning from the PUP list, Harbaugh said he plans to wait and to see how he comes around.
“We’ll see how it comes along,” Harbaugh said on Crabtree’s progress after practice. “We’ll see how quickly he’s acclimated to playing shape, football shape.”
Crabtree was out on the practice field catching passes but returned to individual workouts afterwards. There wasn’t any major route running, but just simple screen passes for about 10 minutes at the beginning of practice.
Crabtree cheerfully declined to talk to the media.
“Once I get back on that field running routes, I’ll be the first person talking to y’all,” he said to the waiting media.
Harbaugh confirmed that what he did on Thursday was just during warmups, that it wasn’t part of practice. Crabtree was still on the PUP list yesterday and the team has contacted the league about Crabtree’s participation.
“He did not practice,” Harbaugh confirmed. “Didn’t run any routes. He just played catch.”
The league agreed that it was a pre-practice incident and there would be no punishment.
After practice, running back Frank Gore said that there had not been a deal done on his new contract extension. Gore confirmed that when a “fair” offer was on the table, his agent Drew Rosenhaus would contact him. Rosenhaus spent all day with the 49ers on Monday and is currently on a flight out of town.
“Hopefully we can get something done before the season,” Gore said. “I want to be here for my whole career. Hopefully my side, their (49ers) side can get it done.”
“I’m very optimistic,” Harbaugh said about the contract talks. “Frank’s a great guy. He’s a true 49er.”
Gore remained optimistic and said that he has talked with his agent about the situation. The running back said his agent felt good about the negotiations.
There was a tweet that circulated the Internet about Gore had signed his contract. The team has not confirmed the news. A few minutes prior to the tweet broke, general manager Trent Baalke was talking with players in the locker room. It’s safe to say that the “report” was bogus.
- C Jonathan Goodwin will start at center on Thursday. All other starters will see some action, but how much is yet to be determined.
- TE Vernon Davis was absent from practice. Harbaugh said that he was out due to a “personal reason” with his family.
- CB Shawntae Spencer said he doesn’t expect to play in the final preseason game.
“It’s a nagging injury, I just don’t want it to linger on into the season,” Spencer said. Spencer said he doesn’t know how he’ll be when the season begins, but he confirmed that it will continue to be a day-to-day situation.”
- Harbaugh said the reason why they had to cut LB Scott McKillop was because he didn’t see him getting a spot on with the team and wanted to give him the best situation for him to find another one.
- WR Braylon Edwards had some encouragement about the team’s slow start on offense.
“Once we get everybody on the field, this offense will be explosive,” he said after practice “I do believe that.”
The team faces the Chargers in San Diego for their final preseason game on Thursday.
