SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers have announced that they have signed draft picks Bruce Miller and Daniel Kilgore to four-year contracts.
Miller is a seventh round draft pick from Central Florida that played at defensive end. However, the 49ers will be converting him to a fullback. Kilgore is an seventh round pick offensive linemen from Appalachian State that could see time at center with the 49ers looking for depth at the position.
These two are the first of the 10 draft picks to sign contracts.
According to Matt Barrows, the 49ers have agreed to a five-year deal with defensive end Ray McDonald. The deal is worth $20 million with $7 million in guaranteed money. McDonald can officially sign his contract on Friday afternoon.
McDonald had expressed his desire to become a starter and by signing with the 49ers, it seems that Aubrayo Franklin’s stay is likely over. With Franklin gone, the 49ers will have Isaac Sopoaga move to nose tackle and McDonald can start at defensive end.
The 49ers drafted McDonald in 2007 but has not seen a consistent starting role. He has been injured and has been used in third down situations. However, it looks like the 49ers are sure that he can become a solid player in a full-time role.
EDIT: Clements’ agent and the 49ers have said that such a move has not occurred.
According to Jason La Canfora of NFL Network, the 49ers have decided to cut cornerback Nate Clements from the roster. This move will free up $15 million from the salary cap. The move can be made official tomorrow.
It had been speculated that the move would occur if the 49ers were unable to restructure Clement’s contract. Clements had not lived up to the billing of his large contract and the 49ers believe that they had to make a move. There had been an idea that Clements would move to safety but the 49ers decided that cutting Clements was the better option.
Earlier in the day, the 49ers were linked to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha. With the need for a new starting cornerback, this gives the 49ers a good opportunity to sign the Pro Bowler.
The 49ers have also added five more undrafted free agents to the roster.
- WR Dontavia Bogan (South Florida) 6’1″, 188lb
- DE Brian Bulcke (Stanford) 6’4″, 285lb
- DE Demarcus Dobbs (Georgia) 6’6″, 275lb
- CB Cory Nelms (Miami) 6’0″, 195lb
- RB Seth Smith (New Mexico State) 5’8″, 198lb
Each player can help add depth to their respective positions. Here are the other 13 free agents the 49ers had signed.
Notre Dame nose tackle Ian Williams, who signed with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent earlier in the day, spoke briefly with the media. He said that his stock dropped during the draft because teams were afraid that he wasn’t fully healed from an MCL injury. But he feels that he is ready to take on a new challenge with the 49ers.
Williams noted that when he played against Stanford, he liked Harbaugh’s tough approach and that helped him decide on the 49ers. When the lockout was lifted, 10-15 teams called him about his services.
The possibility of changes at nose tackle position was what helped convince Williams to join the 49ers. He said he didn’t know which position he’d play, but he wanted to be a good run stopper.
