The 2011 New York State Fair kicked off yesterday in Syracuse. The crowds actually were not bad on this day. I arrived with family in tow around 1 in the afternoon. Got a great parking spot right across from one of the gates, so we were inside in minutes. No lines at the gate. Perfect!
Thing’s that you notice as you walk in are; smells – both food and animals, the buzz of sounds all around you, people of all types in all places, and music. Carnival music, rides, horns from somewhere, and coming from sound systems of all shapes and sizes. As we made our way through various buildings with cows, goats, Llama’s and pigs on the way to the Midway, I decided that I like this place this year. I’m one of those that goes because I have to sometimes, kids and such. Syracuse area residents, well we are spoiled with it here every year. We grew up going to it and it’s not a big deal or trip getting there like those from other parts of the state and country.
The music was all around. I could hear the a free show in the distance as I watched the kids get spun around and flung in all directions at the Midway and Kiddieland. Pointer Sisters, I believe were performing. Okay then, well I don’t roller disco so, no go. This was a kid day for me. I tried hanging out to catch the first few from Just A Memory, but we were exhausted an hour before they were scheduled to begin. I’ll make it up to them. The Grandstand show last night was: Maroon 5 and Train with Gavin DeGraw. Nithing about this made me want to shell out $35 in any way, shape, or form. I know that tragically, after the show someone commited suicide apparently. Here is the link to that story. Sad.
My one surprise and thrill was catching Dave Hawthorn as we made our way out. He was a one-man show and I must say, his redition of Ice Cream Man was kicking ass and the crowd was loving it. I will check out this guy in the future!
