15 Muslims were arrested yesterday at the Rye Playland amusement after a fight broke out at the Westchester County amusement park.
According to an article titled “Wild Scene Erupts at Playland: Police Arrest 15 in Dispute Over Muslim Hijab” on Glenn Beck’s news/commentary website, TheBlaze.com: “A massive disturbance broke out at Playland Park in Westchester County, New York, Tuesday when a group of Muslim visitors grew angry over park rules forbidding the use of ‘headgear’ on some of its rides. The headgear, in this instance, was the traditional Muslim head covering — often called a hijab — worn by women.”
In the end, 60 police officers from 9 different agencies came to the scene, for which a 2-hour police lockdown occurred.
3,000 Muslims had come to the park to celebrate the end of Ramadan.
According to Playland spokesman Peter Tartaglia, park officials had been explicit in expressing to the Muslim American Society of New York, which sponsored the end-of-Ramadan event, why certain types of Muslim and other headgear were banned from rides. Tartaglia said that, beyond the fact that hats and other head coverings could fall onto tracks and derail rides: “It’s a safety issue on rides. If it’s a scarf, you could choke.”
In Cambridge, England in December 2009, an 18-year-old girl was strangled to death after her scarf became caught in a go-cart engine.
Predicably enough, the perennially-aggrieved Council of American-Islamic Relations was displeased with the supposed bigotry revealed by this incident. According to Zead Ramadan, president of the Council on American-Islamic Relations – New York: “In this heightened state of Islamaphobia, a woman wearing a hajib is an easy target these days.”
Comments to Beck’s TheBlaze.com site generally showed exasperation with the Muslims’ expressed outrage over rules that are of course designed to protect them (reminiscent of Henry Louis Gates’s outburst when Cambridge, Massachusetts police were attempting to protect his home).
According to ChiefGeorge: “They’ll sue, they’ll win a settlement and that money will come from the tax payers.”
“Hungry_I” wrote: “I respect anyone who quietly and respectfully adheres to their religious customs, whatever they are, rather than make a show them, as this group did.”
A post from “Jueta” read: “We want special rules for us and if you don’t give them to us we will raise our voices, start talking and even yelling really loud to draw attention to us and then, wait for it, wait for it! Then we will shout RACIST!” (“Linkedin G” responded to that comment with “The boy who cried wolf … er … I mean … racism …”)
