WIth one week to go until WWE SummerSlam, this week will be the shows to tie up any loose ends before Sunday arrives. The main event of course will be WWE Champion John Cena versus WWE Champion CM Punk so it’s going to be interesting to see just what happens as we head into the take-it-home summer WWE event.
1.) Triple H is out first and he’s got some things to say of course. Oh, he’s going to be the special referee for Punk and Cena this Sunday, but first they both have matches tonight. Holy hell, an opening Raw promo that lasted only six minutes? What is this world coming to?
None the less, the official contract signing will go down this evening as just announced per Trips and WHOA…they already have a graphic for it.
2.) So Cena gets Jack Swagger who went from a company champion to Michael Cole‘s bodyguard to being virtually invisible. Oooo scary. As I was saying…Swagger holds offense for eight or so minutes, Cena gets one reversal and the useless moves of doom to pick up the sin. SURPRISE!
Winner – John Cena
3.) Bret “The Hitman” Hart Vs. Mr. Perfect for the Intercontinental Title…there really just aren’t a lot of matches or wrestlers like that anymore. Also, no-one seems to give that much of a damn about the IC Title anymore either.
4.) Here comes Rey Myste………..AND The Miz comes out with a huge boot to the head and is simply thrashing him on the stage. This is beautiful and made my whole night.
Sure, Miz missed badly with that kick to Rey’s head while he was laying on the big WWE thing, but the rest of the show could Cole dressed as The Genius reciting poetry about the Bushwhackers and I’d still give Raw a thumbs up.
Ok, so instead of Rey, it is Kofi Kingston against The Miz. This could be good. Well, it ended up being kind of sloppy from both guys, but at least Miz picked up the win.
Winner – The Miz
5.) Cena gets Swagger and Punk gets Alberto Del Rio. Yeah, because that’s balanced, but at least this one should be a really good match. Well, nevermind that either because it was extremely lackluster and Punk essentially squashed Del Rio after getting beat down for five minutes. What the…?
Winner – CM Punk
6.) There is a huge reason that the WWE Divas are givevn such little time on the air and it is because of those like Eve who botched about four moves and then gave Beth Phoenix a very stiff kick to the mouth. 20 bucks says Beth wanted to slam Eve’s face to the mat hard and very legit.
Absolutely loved Beth’s promo after the match too because she said exactly what I’ve been thinking. And then Kelly Squared came out for one last image of herself with that God awful belt. Please…please just let Beth destroy Kelly on Sunday.
Winner – Beth Phoenix
7.) Dolph Ziggler‘s music got tweaked a little and I dig it. Ahhh and that slap to Alex Riley‘s face from Vickie Guerrero should set up a full match between the two for the U.S. Title at SummerSlam on Sunday. Man, this has been an awful night for actual matches.
Winner – Alex Riley
8.) Again, the WWE does video recap montages like no-one else’s business. The John Cena Vs. CM Punk story was told beautifully. They literally made it appear as if this feud has been going on for five or six months when it has maybe been at just about a month in reality. Nice.
9.) While the end of the match kind of came out of nowhere, the R-Truth Vs. John Morrison match was easily the best of the night. Morrison looks great after being out with injury so long and that twist over the corner ringpost looked scary in slo-mo as he almost nailed it on the way down. Impressive from both guys though and nice win for Truth.
Winner – R-Truth
10.) The main event contract signing and already CM Punk is making this pure gold. But then he throws it to The Rock on the Tron and the line of the night is when he calls Cena a “bloated transvestite Wonder Woman.” Honestly, that little three-minute video from The Rock proves to me how much I can’t wait for it to get closer to WrestleMania and hear the promos he does on Cena.
Overly generic response from Cena. It wasn’t bad, but it really wasn’t anything special at all…then leave it to Triple H to throw in some great one-liners. And WOW…Punk goes off on John Laurinaitis asking him he fired Kozlov, Harry (yes, Harry) Smith, and Chris Masters face-to-face.
That just got the ENTIRE crowd on his side. It was kind of split all night, but not anymore. Punk then brings up when he won the WWECW Title and remembers when Cena told him the next day, “I almost gave up on you.” This is brilliant.
Cena attempted a comeback on the mic and did decently, but then Punk shut him up again with just one line. With that, there is a SummerSlam main event staredown that actually meant something for the first time in years. Punk ends the night asking Trips if “the fix is in” as the crowd chants “CM Punk” very loudly.
