Although New York declared a state of emergency long before the extreme weather arrived on our shores, some people chose to approach Mother Nature’s fury with a sense of adventure. Sadly, this approach is often deadly.
Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives continue to investigate the drowning death of an East Islip man who went windsurfing on Sunday afternoon during the last vestiges of Hurricane Irene.
During a storm that saw the Atlantic Ocean wash up onto the boardwalk of several Long Island beaches, Joseph Rocco of East Islip took to the waves. Rocco went windsurfing in Bellport Bay off Parkview Drive and Grandview Drive in Shirley at approximately 4:00 p.m. Rocco was taken under water and was later discovered by a bystander on the shore.
Rocco, 68, was transported by Mastic Beach Ambulance Company to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue, where he was pronounced dead. The investigation is continuing.
