It’s a great time to be a spirits and cocktail lover in Vancouver. Last week’s Giffard Iron Bar Competition featured almost forty of British Columbia’s best bartenders from Vancouver, Victoria, Whistler, and Kelowna, and was won by Jacob Sweetapple of the Hotel Fairmont Pacific Rim, with Justin Taylor of the Four Seasons’ YEW Restaurant + Bar and was open to the public (for free!) to sample all of the submitted entries and all of Giffard’s premium syrups (mixed with a little bubbly…). To open up such an event to the general public really speaks to the true inclusivity that is one of the hallmarks of Vancouver’s excellent and growing cocktail scene.
Another exciting cocktail event taking place Monday, August 29 with a truly inclusive concept is Made With Love. While not free ($40 a ticket in advance/$50 at the door), the organizers invite the public to vote for their top choice from ten all-star local competitors. Drinker’s Choice – I like it!
Some of the greats featured at Made With Love include: Cooper Tardival, formerly of Mosaic in Halifax, now of Hawksworth Restaurant, which pretty much headhunted some of Canada’s top bartenders from Vancouver and beyond; Keenan Hood of the Keefer Bar; Shaun Layton of L’Abbatoir, Jacob Sweetapple, and many more!
