MTV’s 28th annual Video Music Awards aired Sunday, August 28, 2011 honoring the best in music videos. The music world’s finest and well, who are they anyway folk walked the black carpet dressed to impress or not with equally designed quaffs to match. As usual, surprises were nonexistent as everything from Madonna’s gyrating in a wedding gown to making out with Christina and Britney has been done and redone. Not even Lady Gaga, dressed as a man was a shock, disturbing yes, shocking, no. Here are the author’s pick for best, worst and “Oh My Gawd” hairstyle of the MTV VMAs!
Worst and first on the list is Deena from The Jersey Shore. Besides looking like a rainbow stuffed sausage or meatball in her micro mini, her hair would have looked great with the new ombré highlights in a half up half down look, even though the top was beginning to resemble her pal Snooki’s poof, but then the top looked messy, as if she forgot to comb it after one of her nights of “cuddling”. As the evening went on, someone must have given her a step stool to gaze at her reflection in the mirror because it was finally smoothed out before she presented with her cast mates. Hope she remembered her panties. Unfortunately, Katy Perry with her mauve color hair, blonde re-growth and block of cheese hat lands her on the worst list. Her beautiful Marilyn Monroe wavy bob kept her out of the “oh my gawd” category, but her use of color and accessories was a bit absurd.
Best hairstyle of MTV’s Video Music Awards belongs to young actress and pop-star Selena Gomez. An up-do can never be wrong and hers added a bit of elegance to her flirty gown. The twisted waves in a French chignon kept it young and fresh and showed off her perfect features as it was pulled off of her face. Sammi Sweetheart Giancola with Nicole Snooki Polizzi from the Jersey Shore and pop-star Demi Lovato wore the same style with long flowing wavy locks down and Jenni JWoWW Farley, Jersey Shore favorite, looked fabulous with her hair pulled off to the side in a pony tail; all adding a touch of style to the MTV Video Awards.
“Oh my Gawd, I just can’t” goes to Nicki Minaj’s cake topping, 1960’s bouffant blonde, yellow and pink wig which must have been borrowed from the character Edna Turnblad in Hairspray that was reminiscent of a strawberry banana swirl ice cream cone. She won for best hip-hop video but lost for the worst hairstyle of the VMAs. And Lady Gaga, who opened the Video Music Awards as Jo Calderone, was just bizarre as only Lady Gaga can do landing her as the leader of the Oh My Gawd award in typical Lady Gaga fashion.
Award show red carpets generally see their fair share of glitz, glamour and unusual. MTV and the Video Music Awards push the envelope where the glitz and glamour is the eccentric as a form of creative, artistic expression. Looking forward to next year’s VMAs and all that MTV has to offer.
