While browsing for gadgets, we came upon the Spy Shops USA (Rochester, Michigan). It was a good thing we did, because we found a gadget that you really need to know about – especially if you have been naughty on your workstation. At first we thought the Spy Shop was a great place to channel your inner 007 or detective. Turns out we were not far from wrong. The gadget in question is the very intriguing Data Recovery Stick.
If you use a computer station at work or at home, most of you have worried about the accidental deletion or loss of your data and work. Did you put something you need in the Recycle Bin and hit the ‘Delete’ key? The Data Recovery Stick (made by Paraben Corporation) is a slick little device designed to recover that lost or deleted data. The current price on this little marvel is $159.99 – down from the previous $199.99. You might be thinking “Great! Now I don’t have to worry about losing my work or data!”.
The trouble is that your employer – or even the authorities – can do the same. This slick little gadget can be had by all – it may even be slicker than the Cellebrite UFED. Yes – this device can actually function as a forensics tool. And that’s not all – the Paraben Corporation makes other similar ‘thumb drive’ devices similar to the Data Recovery Stick. For a quickie list of those gadgets click on the link here. For instance, they also produce an iRecovery Stick, a Phone Recovery Stick, the Data Devil Stick (which can recover data from many digital devices), the Porn Detection Stick, the Windows Breaker Stick (which can pull your password/s), the Chat Stick (which is good for detecting online predators) and the SIM Card Seizure Stick (recovers your phone SIM card data).
Do these devices actually work? In a word, yes. The Thomas Register wrote a brief review of the devices. And the NIJ (National Institue of Justice) did an extensive joint study ‘recovering’ data from a wide variety of devices. To be fair, the Spy Shops USA has received one semi-serious complaint (but the complainant did not mention the product). Otherwise, the Paraben Stick forensic devices seem to be a sure thing.
