Everyone always ask when should I send out the save the dates, that is really completely up to you.
First lets talk about what a save the date is. It is a small sheet of paper that just has basic information on it. The couples names, city that the wedding will be happening in, if there is wedding website, and usually if there is a formal invitation to follow. Of course it has the wedding date on it.
It can be designed anyway you want, just a piece of paper, as a magnet, a business card, or bookmark. It’s usually in the wedding colors and wedding theme if there is one. Some just have a design on them and other have a picture of the couple. Truthfully you can design it however you want, you can buy them or you can make them yourself.
Back to the question at hand, how soon should they be sent out? Lets say you have a destination wedding, then you should probably send them out as early as possible to give people a chance to plan for it. The same goes if you have a good amount of out of town guest, so for these two situations lets say a year in advance wouldn’t be a bad idea.
Since Chicago is a very big tourist destination especially in the summer, if you are planning on having a summer wedding it would probably help to send the save the dates out early. Especially if you don’t reserve rooms at a hotel, so people can book rooms really early. Even if you did reserve rooms at a hotel in case there are some people who can’t afford to stay at that hotel it would give them a change to find one they can afford. For a Chicago summer wedding, it would probably be a good idea to send them out as soon as possible.
If you have a wedding where all the guest are in one location, then you probably won’t need to send them out more then nine months in advance. You don’t want to send them out too close to the actual wedding invitations.
Save the dates work out really well for larger weddings of over a hundred where there are a lot of guest. For smaller weddings of fewer than one hundred people, then it’s up to you if you really think you should sent them out. Remember this; they are a great way of letting your guest know and prepare for your wedding in advance.
