Calgary’s Amonn Nelson had advanced to the final in the women’s 400m at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
On Wednesday, Nelson posted a time of 53.06 seconds, which was good enough for third place in her semi-final heat. Jenna Martin of Bridgewater, Nova Scotia also advanced to the women’s final Thursday after running second in her semi-final heat with a time of 52.97 seconds.
In men’s volleyball, Calgary’s Rudy Verhoeff recorded eight kills and four blocks as Canada defeated Australia 25-20, 25-17, 25-20 to improve to 4-0 and will play South Korea in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Canadian team did win two medals on Wednesday to improve their total to four. Swimmer Tera Van Beilen of Oakville, Ontario won a Silver medal in the women’s 50m breaststroke and Marie-Eve Beauchemin-Nadeau of Candiac, Quebec won a Bronze medal in the women’s 69kg weightlifting. Beauchemin-Nadeau previously won a Silver medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India.
