“Bad Teacher” is the latest entry into the raunchy comedy genre starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake and Jason Segel. The actors do a great job playing their parts, but weak writing and too few laughs make this film simply average.
Diaz plays hot elementary school teacher Elizabeth Halsey who pulls out all the stops to get money for breast implants so that she can land a rich boyfriend. She sets her sights on the new substitute teacher, Scott Delacorte (Timberlake) and gets some competition for his affection from Ms. Squirrel (Lucy Punch), a super-perky and annoying fellow teacher. Jason Segel plays gym teacher Russell Gettis who is actually interested in dating Elizabeth despite her character flaws.
The movie throws a bunch of things at the audience that it thinks will be funny just because of the situation. How could it not be funny for a student to catch her teacher smoking marijuana in the parking lot? The problem is that without witty dialogue, most of the movie relies on sight gags and juvenile humor for laughs.
Cameron Diaz brings a lot of spunk and sex appeal to her character and does the best she can with the dialogue. Timberlake is decently funny as a nerdy character that is also a bit of a prude- quite a departure for the man who brought sexy back. Someone should yell at the filmmakers for not using Jason Segel in enough scenes. He is so comfortable on screen and delivers his few lines with crisp comedic timing.
Overall, seeing “Bad Teacher” is not a terrible way to spend an hour and a half but it will definitely not go down as one of the summer’s best movies.
You can see “Bad Teacher” at Landmark Harbor East, AMC Columbia and other local theaters.
