Summer and fall are great times to enjoy fresh local produce. And there is no better place to get fresh delicious produce, than at a local farm stand or farmers market. Middletown and Aquidneck Island residents have many options. Here are just a few.
Wicks Farm, Corn & Veggie Stand is open Tuesdays through Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. You’ll find Wick’s Farm Stand across from Dunkin Donuts at the former gas station. If you are new to Rhode Island and don’t remember the gas station, head for the corner of East Main Road (Route 138) and Aquidneck Avenue in Middletown. The Farm Stand has a bright blue awning and plenty of off-street parking for customers. Their delicious veggies are picked fresh daily!
The Wicks family supported Aquidneck Island by conserving their farm with the Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT). Details on this and other conservation projects are available at ALT’s web site. ALT’s time-sensitive mission is to conserve Aquidneck Island’s open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of the community. So far, the organization has conserved 2,351.85 acres on 62 properties on Aquidneck Island. ALT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and is the first land trust in Rhode Island to have received national accreditation.
On Thursday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. you could also head across Aquidneck Avenue to the Farmers Market at the Middletown Grange (across from Frosty Freeze). You will find fresh produce from Peckham Farm of Middletown and Oakdale Farm of Rehoboth, MA. Aquidneck Honey will be available as well as treats baked by Cornucopia Cafe of Middletown and D. Palmieri’s Bakery of Johnston. Middletown’s Rocklobster will offer fresh lobsters.
On Saturday mornings, Aquidneck Growers’ Farmers Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with vendors from across Rhode Island. You will find ample parking behind the Newport Winery at 909 East Main Road. For a list of vendors attending, click here.
Wherever you call home, please help support your local farms by buying their produce and helping keep their farm viable!
