Teams of pink are beginning to gather all over the state of Illinois with one goal in mind. They want to make strides against breast cancer.
October is breast cancer awareness month and during that month and throughout the year there are many walks and fundraisers that bring awareness and funding to end this horrible disease. This October the American Cancer Society is doing pink a little differently.
Throughout the month of October people will gather throughout the Fox Valley and other regions of Illinois of Pink Differently(sm) with the American Cancer Society.
During the last century the American Cancer Society has played a large role in every major breast cancer research breakthrough. This has been acheived by the enormous support of their Making Strides fundraising efforts.
Since it’s inception in 1993, 7 million walkers have made strides by raising more than $400 million to help in the fight. These walks are non-competitive and are 3-5 miles allowing the most particpants to be able to join in the fight. Money raised in these events are helped in making huge discoveries aiding in the treatment and research necessary to end this disease.
Some of these discoveries include studying protein pathways to eliminate cancer-causing cells, genetic studies to determine treatment responses which have already lead to the drug therapies tamoxifen and herceptin, as well as new therapies to reduce treatment side effects by targeting the cancer cells without damaging the healthy cells.
Most of us either know someone who has been touched by the deadly disease. According to the National Cancer Institutes(NCI) estimates, women born today have a 12.2% risk of developing this disease in their lifetime.
You may have a daughter, you may be a woman, you may already know someone who has fought or is fighting this deadly disease. We are making strides against this disease but those numbers are still too high.
Join the Making Strides effort in Illinois by putting on your pink and making a difference this October. The Fox Valley Walk is being held at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora on Sunday October 16, 2011.
On that same day there will also be six other walks throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.
The entire list for Illinois can be found at the Making Strides website.
