Pet insurance! What is it? Is it worth it? While it may seem daunting or like overkill, you should at least be in the know. Pet insurance is exactly what it sounds like; insurance for your cat or dog. Most often, this only covers accidents and illness. One of the best out there is Trupanion, headquartered right here in Seattle. In 2010, KOMO 4 news named it “Best Place to Work” and “Best Local Business”.
Why is it one of the best, you ask? Trupanion is one of the best because they cover 90% of veterinary costs (less the exam fee and optional deductible). What it does not cover are exams, wellness/preventative care (dental cleanings, vaccinations, flea treatment), or pre-existing conditions. What is does cover are diagnostic testing, surgery, medication, hospital stays, and other treatments arising from an animal getting sick or injured. This INCLUDES hereditary and congenital disorders (that did not exist prior to coverage). For those of you with dogs predisposed to hip dysplasia, or breeds like bulldogs, insurance can be a life saver. Or pups that just always seem to get into trouble- you know the ones that eat anything they get their paws on.
Your premium is based on age at enrollment, breed, and location of the dog. You can choose your deductible, or none at all. And your premiums are never raised due to aging or number of claims made. Of course this is contingent upon continuous coverage. But there are no payout limits either. So the earlier in your pet’s life you enroll the less costly it will be.
Something else cool? Some local Seattle vets have partnered with Trupanion (call your vet to ask), so that when you bring in your healthy pet you can get 30 free days of trial coverage with your vet’s signature.
