Peaks View Park in Lynchburg is filled with cars this weekend but there aren’t many kids playing on the outdoor play equipment. Instead, parents are sitting in the shade and huddled under canopies watching their daughters compete in the IFA Summer Slam fastpitch softball tournament http://www.playifa.org/GameTimes.htm. Even though the temperatures are in the upper 90s, the girls are all taking it in stride.
There are softball games on all of the fields at Peaks View Park all day today with the last games starting between 6:30pm and 7:30pm. Action will start again tomorrow at 9am. There are 6 teams competing in the 10 and under age bracket, 5 teams competing in the 12 and under age bracket, 12 teams competing in the 14 and under age bracket, and 8 teams in the 16 and under and 18 and under age brackets. The 16U/18U team is a high school league to help high school aged players improve their skills over the summer. Prizes are awarded at tournaments for home runs over the fence, perfect games, and no-hitters.
The concession stand is doing a brisk business and there’s a souvenir booth selling t-shirts and other goodies. There’s a truck full of cases of water to supply all teams and keep the girls hydrated. Between games, girls roam through the park in groups or cool down under the canopies. Families are welcome at IFA tournaments and many of them line the sidelines cheering for their girls.
The Independent Fastball Association was started in August 2008 and had 11 tournaments with 330 teams that year. This is Lynchburg’s first year hosting a tournament but it doesn’t look like it will be the last. The goal of the organization was to make competitive softball tournaments fun and enjoyable for the entire family. From the looks of all of the families at Peaks View Park this weekend, they have succeeded. Peaks View Park has three entrances, one off Wiggington Road, one off Tenbury Drive, and one off Ardmore Drive. So come on out and watch some great competition!
