Farmers, consumers, and food producers have at least one thing in common: they can’t be in more than one place at a time.
I live in an area where, if I so desired, I could visit the supermarket, natural foods store, farm stand, and farmer’s market all in one ten-mile round trip. Many of us could not. Likewise, small food producers and medium-size family farms would need significant resources to distribute to, say, Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Fort Wayne, and Louisville. That’s where Green B.E.A.N. Delivery comes in.
Green B.E.A.N. Delivery is a growing company that’s created 105 jobs in the aforementioned cities since its founding in 2007. They make 5000 deliveries each week of produce, meat, and artisan-produced prepared foods. B.E.A.N. is an acronym for company principles of providing a Biodynamic service, Educating customers, supporting local Agriculture, and Nutrition.
“We say to our farmers and artisans: keep doing what you’re doing. Keep your CSA, keep going to market, but if you want to produce more than that, we’ll help you distribute. We have the infrastructure,” said John Freeland, a Vice President who is part of Green B.E.A.N. Delivery’s Cincinnati operations. For example, Luna Burger is a Columbus company that produces veggie burgers. “They had the product,” said John, but as a young company, Luna Burger would not have been able to distribute to all of the regional markets without Green B.E.A.N. Delivery.
Green B.E.A.N. Delivery is a resource for gathering a family’s grocery needs from local sources without increasing the carbon footprint. Green B.E.A.N. Delivery sources products locally where possible, but they offer fresh produce from elsewhere that isn’t available locally. That might mean warm weather crops, or it might just be a way to get the freshest available in winter.
For those of you in the Loveland, Kennedy Heights and Centerville areas, Locally Harvested for You provides a similar service that I encourage you to consider, but they consolidate to a central pick-up location. You can read my previous article about them by clicking on my name below. The headline says, “Virtual farm market”. For those in other areas, consider Green B.E.A.N. Delivery.
