The England Women’s team continued their recent excellent run of results earlier today in the group stages of the Women’s world cup with a 2-0 victory over Japan, lifting them to the top of Group B.
The Japanese are currently ranked fourth in the world to England’s tenth, and had won both of their previous games in the group stage with England having drawn one and won one. To make matters worse England had never beaten Japan in a competitive game and although have been racking up wins of late, have struggled in several of their previous matches.
The scoring was opened up after just a quarter of an hour by Arsenal striker Ellen White, and England sealed the deal in the 66th minute as substitute Rachel Yankey added to the tally, putting the game beyond Japan who throughout enjoyed more possession.
The current Group B standings are as follows:
England: 7 points
Japan: 6 point
Mexico: 2 point
New Zealand: 1 point
Elsewhere today in Group A, Germany beat France 4-2, maintaining their so far perfect record in the competition, while Nigeria bested Canada 1-0 to give them their first win and lift them from the bottom of the group.
In the other match of Group B, New Zealand and Mexico drew 2-2, the best result possible for group leaders England and currently second place Japan.
