At first glance: Discreetly located off the city’s main square is a set of sliding glass doors that open into the spacious, light lobby. Smart, courteous staff make check in a quick, painless affair.
The great outdoors: And there’s plenty of it in Toulouse, or La Ville Rose (The Pink City) as it is known. This is France’s fourth largest city and it’s home to a young, professional and urbane populace.
Room with a view: The Crowne Plaza has just been awarded a fifth star, but the room was small and the decor a tad tired for a hotel of this distinction. Happily the sizeable bathroom was better quality.
What’s for breakfast? An American buffet served in the split-level restaurant. On offer is a selection of hot dishes (scrambled eggs, tomatoes, hash browns, sausages) and plenty of fresh fruit, juices, bread, charcuterie, cheese and tea and coffee.
Who’ll be in the elevator? Young at heart older Americans and suited and booted international business travellers.
What’s to do? There’s a small gym in the basement for guests. Outside turn left for an electic mix of bistros, restaurants and cafes, turn right and hit Place Capitole. This is Toulouse’s main square and hosts weekday and weekend markets, is lined with the Opera house and a host of streetside cafes which are perfect for people watching. Just beyond is shopping heaven with a mix of designer and high street brands. Head to the Tourism office nearby for more information.
