The Ames Straw Poll, typically considered as the field test for presidential candidates, was won by presidential hopeful Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann.
What does this mean for you and the 2012 presidential election? Absolutely nothing. Out of the last three Iowa straw polls, only one (George W. Bush) became president. In the last poll, the winner (Mitt Romney) did not even make it to become the Republican candidate for president. That position went to Sen. John McCain. And while the winner for this election cycle is galvanizing a strong base among the Tea Party section of the Republican party, for Bachmann to be a serious contender, she must garner the approval of mainstream Republicans, moderates of both parties and independents. But right now, it could be said that she does not even curry well with the Republican establishment, which she will need if she ever expects to move into the Oval Office.
