An assault in Bayport early yesterday evening led to an arrest yesterday afternoon in Huntington. The victim, a musician had been admitted to the hospital with serious head injuries after being attacked by an assailant with a crowbar.
At approximately 3:45 yesterday morning, the victim, 39 year old Michael Hargreaves, finished performing at the Grey Horse Tavern on Bayport Avenue. As he was leaving, he was attacked by Jalaluddin Khojandi, age 25, who was wielding a crowbar. After the assault, Khojandi left the scene. Hargreaves was taken to the Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue via the Patchogue Community Ambulance Service. He was admitted with serious head injuries.
Khojandi, who is undomiciled or homeless, fled the scene in a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria. The car was later spotted outside of Khojandi’s place of employment on East Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station by officers from the 2ndPrecinct while they were on patrol. Recognizing the vehicle from a broadcast that had been put out immediately after the assault, they had it impounded. As this was occurring at approximately 4:00 p.m., Khojandi was seen driving by in another car and police gave chase. Not long after, Khojandi was arrested without incident while still on East Jericho Turnpike.
Khojandi was charged with assault in the first degree for his attack on Michael Hargreaves. He was held overnight by police and will be arraigned today at the First District Court in Central Islip.
