So, have you made plans yet for National Watermelon Month? Surely, you haven’t forgotten that July is the month set aside to commemorate the juicy melons that gave their all to ensure that our picnics were not in vain.
If you’re still in the market for an appropriate homage to the summery fruit, Havana Central may have just the thing. Starting this coming Monday, July 11, and running through the end of National Watermelon Month, the Cuban eatery will be hosting a four-course Watermelon Fiesta Tasting Menu.
The menu, which also includes a watermelon mojito, begins with watermelon gazpacho and moves on to a watermelon and bleu cheese salad, which is in turn succeeded by either salmon with grilled watermelon salsa or grilled shrimp with watermelon-pineapple salsa. For dessert there is a drunken summer sundae—a booze-infused parfait of red and yellow watermelon soaked in spiked simple syrup, layered with warm chocolate brownie morsels and classic vanilla bean ice cream.
The restaurant had not settled on a price for the dinner as of press time, though I was told the bottom line will likely reflect the cost of individual items on the à la carte “Watermelon Menu,” which is in force through August.
